When you participate in a community such as the Discuss Fast pitch Forum, one of the things you'll find is people are often quite fanatical about the sport. Those who post frequently are particularly into it, so it's not surprising that they tend to focus on the highest levels of the game.

Unfortunately, one of the byproducts of that can be other members wondering what is wrong with their daughters/players because they don't have that desire to play 18U Gold as 14 year old, or to go to UCLA on a full ride scholarship. It can seem like if you're not shooting for the top you're just wasting your time.

Yet nothing could be further from the truth. One of the great things about fast pitch softball is that everyone can participate, regardless of size, ability or even dedication. There really is a level for everyone.

Let's look at size first. In basketball and volleyball, it really helps to be tall. Sure, there are shorter kids who can play a role, but they're unlikely to be the stars. The same with a heavy-set kid. But in softball you don't have to be big to have a good batting average or outstanding fielding percentage. You just have to make the plays.

If you're fast and small, you can be a slapper or a base runner. If you're big and slow, you can be a power hitter. There's a place for everyone; in fact, the only ones who really have a tough time are the kids who can't grasp the complexities, because there's a lot to know and it's all situational.

But the real key is in the levels. Not every girl wants to be a top-level player. Many, in fact, are content to be stars in their local rec league, or the best player on their high school team, and that's it. So what's wrong with that?
Nothing, really. Being a top-level player requires a lot of dedication. If you want to play at a top school you have to give up a lot to get there. Then you have to give up even more once you're there. Sorry, but that's just not for everybody.
Some players have no intention of every playing a single inning in college. That doesn't make their desire to play the game any less valid. In fact, it may make it more pure because they're playing simply for the love of the game rather than as a means to something else.

There are lots of reasons to play. Fun is certainly one of them — and a reason that often gets forgotten in our success-driven culture. Some just love competing; they want to challenge themselves, but they don't necessarily care to put in the deep practice required to be a D1 prospect. And, of course, some want to see just how far they can go in the sport.
I think that's one of the things that has been lost with softball eliminated from the Olympics. Some people at the top of the game decry it because they say it takes away the dream for players. That's nonsense.

Most of the players in the game have no ambition or expectation of playing on the National Team, either at the Olympics or anywhere else. Their dream is to win their league championship, or a particular tournament, or play for their high school varsity or dozens of other goals. Sure, it's nice to see our sport in the Olympics. But it's not a necessity for the survival of the game.

What's important is to remember that players play for a wide variety of reasons — and every single one of them is equally worthwhile. In the end, the key is to get out there and play. That's why there are so many different levels — so everyone can find the one that suits them best.

Keep that in mind the next time you find yourself tempted to say someone else "only" plays this or that level. For them that may be enough, even if it's not for you.
Anyway, that's the way I see it.

There are 3 things that can help softball pitchers a great deal. In fact, these 3 things are practically necessities for great softball pitchers. No, I'm not talking about speed, a great change up, and movement, though those things are most definitely beneficial to pitchers. I'm actually talking about 3 things that are completely unrelated to the physical task of pitching a softball. What are they?
Selective Hearing

One of THE most talked about players on a team is the pitcher. When they do well, they can get a lot of credit. On the flip side, when things go badly, they can often get the blame for a lot of it (even if it's not necessarily from teammates or coaching staff). People will definitely talk and if a pitcher hears it all and focuses too much on the negativity that can surround that position, it can be detrimental to their confidence, their focus, and ultimately, to their performance.

Also, pitchers tend to have at least one parent who will try to "coach" them from the stands in some way shape or form. While, as a parent, I completely understand that this parent is really, truly trying to help, I also know, as a former player who was on the receiving end of those "helpful" tips, that the good intentions of parents are not what come through on the other side. Too often I see pitchers (and other players too) who lose focus on what's important, get frustrated, or lose confidence in themselves because of their parent's "help."
So having the ability to filter out the "noise" or distractions as a pitcher is critical to your success.

Tunnel Vision

I agree that knowing your opponent, a.k.a. the batter, is important. This can help you attack their weaknesses more effectively. However, once you know what pitch you are going to throw, the batter becomes irrelevant. You MUST be able to focus straight ahead and block out EVERYTHING else, including the batter standing the box.

I recently saw a game where the pitcher threw quite differently against the bottom half of the order than she did against the top half. Against the bottom half you could see her confidence. She just threw. She just did her thing. She hit her spots better and, of course, she was more successful.

Against the top half, however, you could tell she was unsure. The confidence wasn't there and you could tell she was trying not to make a mistake. Because of this tentativeness, she didn't hit her spots quite as crisply and when that happens against good hitters, it can mean bad things! She knew these hitters were tough and she was carrying that worry with her when she was pitching the ball. She was almost beat by those batters before she even threw a pitch.

As a pitcher, what you throw will obviously change from batter to batter, but how you throw a pitch cannot change. Your approach should be the same all the time, no matter who's in the box. How you throw a particular pitch should stay consistent whether you are throwing it against the best batter on a team or the worst batter on a team or even when you're throwing it without a batter in the box because it's "just practice."

I sometimes get teased because of my "tunnel vision," because I don't see anything outside of what I'm focused on. People wonder how I can possibly miss some of the other things going on around me. LOL - obviously there are times when tunnel vision is bad (like when you're driving!). But being able to shut out everything outside the "tunnel" between you and your catcher when you're throwing your pitch is a valuable skill to have!
Short Term Memory

This is one that is discussed quite often. Pitchers need to be able to have as much focus as possible on the here-and-now, on THIS pitch-not on the last one (or two or three or more), not on the next one, just on THIS one. Carrying past pitches with you is not a good thing. Wondering or worrying about the future or the next batter or the outcome of the game also takes away from the focus you have one what you are doing NOW. Hanging on to worry or anxiety or frustration as you try to throw another pitch WILL have a negative impact on your performance. How can you possibly be at your best when you're carrying all of that around with you? Short term memory, maybe like 2 seconds worth :D, is another must for softball pitchers.

Selective hearing, tunnel vision, and short term memory are not typically seen as assets, but they are if you want to be a great softball pitcher!!!

In fact, there are several ways to spice things up during your softball hitting drills. Your athletes’ interest in the sport will not only be revitalized, but they skills might even be improved tremendously. One interesting softball hitting drill is called the pepper game wherein bat control and short, quick swing is enhanced. This is carried out by standing about 22 feet from your three catchers all standing about two feet away from each other. Next, the ball is hit downward sharply to the three fielders. Each fielder will field the ball tossing it quickly back to you. Next, you hit the ball towards where it was pitched. Maximum of four players are only allowed to join this drill to get better results. To get things a little bit more challenging, try using two softballs.

Another fun softball hitting drill is the colored ball soft toss wherein the player’s concentration is improved. The hitter will also learn how to keep her weight back after contact. In this drill, two balls in different colors are thrown at different heights. As the balls are thrown, the coach will then tell the hitter which ball color should be hit. Then the hitter will hit the ball towards the screen or fence. There are actually several variations of this drill. You may use three different balls in various colors, or write numbers on them. Or, instead of you calling the ball, the hitter will call the ball she will hit when the balls are released. You may also combine these variations to keep things more interesting.

The “bounce in front” softball hitting drill is another interesting variation. This is a great way to improve hitting rhythm and trigger. It also helps the players develop their skills in hitting the ball at the top of the bounce. In this drill, the batter stands about three feet away from the batter. The batter then tosses a tennis ball making it bounce towards the strike area near the plate. The batter will have to wait until the ball is at a perfect height before swinging.
